Dog friendly holidays

More and more these days people are looking for a holiday where they can take their dog(s) with them, prices of pet care or kennels makes it as much again to pay out and often the animals are unhappy to be left.

Sea Field View is a dog friendly chalet and Whitsand bay an all year round dog friendly beach with miles of sand at low tide which, if early/late in the day can mean a beach pretty much to yourselves.

I have seen dogs go mad as they hit the cliff paths, especially if they’ve been before and know what’s ahead of them. Some of the chalet owners on the cliff have fashioned pooper scoopers out of plastic milk cartons which makes it easy to keep the paths clean. Most of the cliff paths are easy off lead but on the approach to Rame Head you are advised to put dogs on leads as wild ponies graze on the cliffs there; again at Mount Edgecombe on the Tamar estuary coast route they advise, as you come out of the woods and cross the fields, to put dogs on leads because of the sheep.

Across the Tamar from Mount Edgecombe at the Royal William Yard, Seco Lounge welcomes dogs to sit inside as well as out and further along the coast on the Plym estuary Saltram House has a lovely dog walk that circles the property (so no need to pay the cost to get into the grounds) and takes you along the Plym estuary. This weekend on the 25th March there is a Sunday Saunter for greyhounds, whippets, lurchers and sighthounds at Saltram, dogs are asked to bring their owners for an 11am start near the courtyard, these saunters seem to happen every last Sunday of the month, for more information click here

In May Port Elliot will be holding the Port Elliot Dog Festival and Whippet Tea party (seems to be a whippet biased post) this is the 4th year it has run and last year the event attracted 700 humans + dogs. All proceeds going to the Children’s Hospice South West. Lots of stalls and refreshments so sounds like a good day out with the pooch.
